Aunt Matilda is just over 80 years old and she has come to mean more to me than ever before. Let me tell you why.
This woman is a prayer warrior. She is a servant of the Lord. She is steadfast in Christ her Lord. She is honest about her shortcomings. She is an encourager. She is a true representation of what it means to walk by faith.
She is a Bible translator.
Not in the sense that you would imagine. She has never gone to Brazil or Papua New Guinea or India or any such other place to live among a people she does not know or a culture she does not understand.
She has, however, joined with us on this journey. She is praying and she is sacrificing of herself so that we may go and in some senses “be the feet to her prayers”. You might try to argue that my calling her a “Bible translator” seems silly (especially since we are not yet at our assignment!)...I pray that the Lord would give you new understanding.
Aunt Matilda is a missionary without ever stepping out of her own home. She is a part of the great commission without ever buying plane tickets. She is serving the Lord in a very REAL, NECESSARY, and CRUCIAL way. And we are not the only family that this woman of God partners with.
This morning I had the chance to pray with her and for her over the phone. We connected on a level that can only be reached when you are learning through the struggle and you are asking God to move. She sharpened me today by encouraging me and pointing me to Scripture and the God who hears. I thank God for her today.
This task truly cannot be done without a team.
Sarah
