Day 6 - The Heartbeat of Wycliffe

Vision 2025

The mission of Wycliffe is to see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by the year 2025. This is known as “Vision 2025”.

Let’s explore what that means.

In 1999, the leaders of Wycliffe sat down and figured out how long it would take before they reached that last language community if they stayed at the current pace they were keeping up (1 new translation beginning every 18 days). What they found was astonishing...that last language group wouldn’t see God’s Word written down in their heart language until the year 2150!!

Too much time would pass, and more importantly, too many people would pass into eternity without ever hearing the life-giving truth of God’s Word in a language that speaks to their heart. At this realization, the genesis of Vision 2025 took place. Wycliffe, along with its partners, challenged the Body of Christ to accelerate the pace...not so it could be said, “Look what we’ve done! Look how we’ve learned to work smarter, harder, and faster!”, but rather that there would be a goal that we could all collectively work towards for the glory of God and for the spiritual ends of all people.

Since the adoption of Vision 2025 in 1999, we have seen the pace of translation dramatically accelerate. By God’s grace and mighty power, new translation projects are starting at an unprecedented rate of one every FOUR to FIVE days (down from one every 18 days in 1999)! God has brought new personnel, new equipment (computers, technology, etc.), more funding, and greater wisdom to work more efficiently.

We can’t stop here, though! In order to meet the goal of Vision 2025, we need to be starting a new translation project approximately once every THREE days. We need to pray that God would bring together the people, the funds, and the know-how to reach this goal.

To put it in different terms, Wycliffe has estimated that they need 25,000 more workers in the next 10 years (they pray to have 7,000 of those from the US alone). Would you pray with us that Vision 2025 would continue to be realized and that God would provide the necessary people to accomplish this task.

Here is a great article posted by Mission Network News talking about this very thing.

Trevor and Sarah;
I am so excited to be a part of this ministry with you guys! I just love reading what you have on here. I am excited about God bringing glory to himself through the proclaimation of his word! Also, you both are very good writers, I think you have a gifting for expressing yourself in print. Love you,Gretchen Brooks

Thanks for putting this blog together and fleshing out your lives and God's heart for Bible translation. Having grown up with access to the scriptures my whole life, I forget that the scriptures I'm able to hold and read in English actually had to be translated...they didn't just always exist. Thanks for being real, traveling, and inviting others to do the same. Can't wait to work alongside you in August :)
