When I was younger, I have very vivid memories of my parents going up in front of church and singing this particular song - "Love Lifted Me"...in Portuguese: "Cristo Me Amou". They would stand real close to each other in front of the pulpit (which usually had a microphone) and share this song with the congregation as special music. If I remember correctly, they would always sing it in Portuguese first, as we were usually in a Brazilian church, and then in English second. Whenever I hear the song, I think of my parents.
Last night while waiting for some friends to come by, Trevor pulled out our Portuguese hymnal and thought he'd have a go at some of the songs. Usually he's the one who plays the piano while we both sing, but this time I noticed him struggling to play AND sing this language that he's just beginning to learn. So, I played and he worked on his Portuguese singing. "Love Lifted Me" was one of the songs we came across, still marked on from when my parents sang it. I was so proud of him I asked if we could record the song today so I could send it to my parents. Well, we did, and now I'm posting it here for you to listen to....he's so embarrassed. :) Here is the English version (which actually is quite different than the Portuguese version) as we did not record that part.
I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more,
But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.
- Love lifted me!
Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me!
He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,
He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.
